The placenta is beginning to form by the end of the second week of development and is fully formed by the tenth week. It consists of tissue from both the mother and the baby. Chorionic villi contain fetal blood vessels and are surrounded by maternal blood. Wastes and nutrients diffuse between the two blood supplies. The placenta has an endocrine function and produces estrogen and progesterone.
